Greyhound Planet Day!
|
JEFFERSONTOWN, KY, September 23, 2006 -- After a bout of rainy weather on the days leading up to it, Greyhound Planet Day
couldn't have taken place on a nicer day.

Although the ground was still somewhat wet, the sun
was shining and in Jeffersontown's Veterans Park, it was the perfect day for a fun filled
gathering of Greyhounds and their owners.
This would be the second time I had ever seen Greyhounds in person. The first was when I
photographed the
Greyhound Festival of the Bluegrass event back in July. I arrived shortly
after 2:00 pm. Although the event had started at 1:00 pm, there was still plenty of fun to be
found. My first inclination was to look for someone in charge, and today this person appeared
to be Carla Cohman. After introducing myself to Carla, I had to step out of her way as she had
raffle items to give away. Camera in hand, I looked around for photo oportunities.
It was only a few minutes later that Carla announced a game for Greyhounds and their owners.
This was the "mummy" game. The goal was to wrap your Greyhound in toilet paper from head to
paws. If the toilet paper at any time broke, you were disqualified. The contestant who completed
the wrapping first would be the winner. I must say... Greyhounds are very tolerant of their humans.
I'm still wondering what goes throught their heads while their human companion is slowly winding
the thin tissue about them. Not a one seemed to object. After several humorous minutes, the
youngest contestant, Noah won with his dog, Sadie.
After the contest, I began to wander around and meet some of the owners and their dogs. During
my course of time there, I met Butchie Boy, Pico, Slim, Sadie, Sunrise Station (Sunny),
Foster, R.J., Kissie, Molly, Darla, and many others. I must say these dogs are very photogenic.
Greyhounds have a natural poise and grace that make them perfect subjects for pet photography.
Not having one of our two staff writers in tow to write this article for me, I'll let the photos speak for themselves to show
the good times to be had that day. If you are interested at all in seeing some of these Greyhounds
for yourselves, look at our
calendar of events for some of the upcoming Greyhound Meet and
Greet days. I guarantee it, you'll love these dogs!
